Preventing and treating stained teeth

Stained Teeth how to treat and prevent

As we get older it can be a key factor of stained teeth.  Many different factors for example diet and genes can all affect white teeth to become yellow and stained.  According to the world health organisation, many people can have psychological problems due to their teeth been discolored.  Self-esteem can start to decline and often people can become uncomfortable when socializing. It’s always best to treat stained teeth early on to ensure they don’t get to this stage.

Main causes of heavily stained teeth?

Stains can be often external on the surface of the teeth, this is often caused by smoking, or excessive consumption of food or drinks such as coffee, tea, pop, red wine etc.  Discolouration can also be internally caused by trauma, excessive fluoride exposure or from using tetracycline during your childhood.

How can stained teeth be improved?

The necessary treatment will depend on the type of discoloration of the teeth. Simple external stains can often be removed during visits to your dental hygienist with professional cleaning and polishing. More resistant stains can be improved with in house teeth whitening and home whitening kits. In more severe cases Veneers or crowns are often the ideal more permanent solution.

Tips for patients with heavily stained teeth

As with anything in life, prevention is often the key.

  • Avoid smoking
  • Avoid heavily staining food and drinks
  • Use a non-abrasive toothpaste
  • Maintain good oral hygiene
  • Visit your dental hygienist at least every 6 months
  • With children avoid excessive exposure to fluoride.

Furthermore, if you have any concerns regarding your stained teeth, please call our dental centre for an assessment with one of our dentists who would be happy to advise any necessary treatments.

Veneers in Northumberland

Let Simpson & Nisbet Dentists give you the dental Veneers you always wanted!

Are you looking for Veneers in Northumberland? Are you self-conscious about your smile? At Simpson and Nisbet dentists, you can finally say goodbye to stained, crooked, or damaged teeth.

Our veneers are generally fitted over a few visits to our cosmetic dentist.  During the first visit, the teeth are profiled to remove a very small layer where the veneer will be fitted. This is so that the porcelain sits comfortably in your mouth and doesn’t protrude the normal tooth line.  After the profiling, the dentist will make an impression of the teeth which will be used to match the veneers as closely as possible to the rest of your teeth.

On the second visit, the profiled teeth will be cleaned and the dental veneers will be cemeted into place with a special dental adhesive. Then you can say hello to your brand new, perfect sparkling smile!

Furthermore, if you have any concerns about the procedure you can always come for a consultation from one of our fully trained, experienced dentists. We have such a good reputation our customer base stretches to Northumberland and beyond and we guarantee you will be more than satisfied with your superstar smile!

Porcelain veneers usually last up to 15 years depending on how well you look after them, and if you grind your teeth at night you will have to consider wearing a night guard when you sleep, to help protect your veneers and keep your radiant smile.

Cosmetic Dentistry in Newcastle

What is Cosmetic Dentistry ?

Cosmetic Dentistry is no longer simply a case of filling and extracting teeth. Nowadays many of us turn to cosmetic dentistry, or ‘aesthetic dentistry’, as a way of improving our appearance. It is starting to become a way of life, just like having a new hair cut or hair extensions, more and more people are choosing cosmetic treatments to lighten, straighten and re shape the look of their teeth.

Our cosmetic dentistry treatments include;

Veneers, dental implants, crowns, white fillings and teeth whitening techniques.

What are veneers ?

Veneers are thin slices of porcelain. These are made to fit over the visable surface of the front teeth, just like a false fingernail fits over your exsisting nails.  Celebrities are using veneers as an ideal way or hiding discoloured teeth or teeth with gaps, repairs or cracks to help give them a lovely white smile. After seeing many celebrities on TV having veneers they have got more and more popular.

With veneers a small amount of enamel is removed from the tooth and an impression is taken by the dentist for the veneer to be made. This is then bonded to your tooth to form a strong and natural looking tooth.

What are dental implants ?

An implant replaces the root of a tooth, which tends to be made of titanium, which is used to support restorations from a tooth or group of teeth to replace missing teeth.

What are crowns ?

Crowns tend to be used for broken or heavily filled teeth. We may need to crown the tooth to help restore its strength and appearance.

Crowns can be made of a variety of different materials, such as porcelain or porcelain bonded to gold.  New materials are constantly coming on to the market. If you are interested in having crowns just give one of our team a call and our cosmetic dentists will be happy to discuss the best solution for your requirements.

White Fillings

White fillings are a popular alternative to amalgam fillings. Furthermore, new dental materials mean it is easier to find a match for the shade of a particular tooth.  In a lot of cases, you cannot even tell that the tooth has a filling.

LaserTeeth Whitening

Otherwise known as plasma, in-office or power whitening.  Our team of cosmetic dentists use Zoom! 3 Advanced Power for our laser teeth whitening which enables to to some achieve amazing results.

Zoom 3 can help achieve up to 12 shades lighter than your current tooth colour.  We also can give you top up trays to use at home to keep your lovely new white smile.

Finally, if you are interested in any of our cosmetic dentistry treatments, simply give us a call on 0191 2812505 and arrange an appointment for a  consultation.

Veneers Newcastle – Creating a new you for 2017

Dental Veneers Newcastle – A new you for 2017

Dental Veneers in Newcastle.

veneers newcastle

How many times have you smiled into the mirror and thought that your teeth just were not as good as they could be?  Perhaps they are chipped, stained, are slightly crooked or have big gaps.   Have you ever thought of looking into Veneers as an option?

If you have stained teeth there are different teeth whitening technics you could try such as Zoom 3 Teeth Whitening. Whitening does not always produce the exact results that people want or hope to achieve.  If your teeth are crooked, you can look into orthodontic work.  However, this can be a long process and not everyone feels comfortable wearing braces unless they really need to.

What you want is something that will make a visible difference to your teeth without it being too much of a major treatment – this is where we find patients tend to opt for dental veneers.

Veneers different types – choices available

Veneers Different Types Of Options For Patients

Veneers different types available for patients.  If you have broken, uneven or discoloured teeth, one of the options possibly available to you will be veneers.  This solution for patients is becoming more and more popular, especially with the growing number of celebrities on the TV with that perfect smile.

What are Veneers?

Veneers are very thin shaped pieces of porcelain which are attached to the front of your teeth, just like a false fingernail fits over a nail.

Sometimes other natural colours ‘composite’ materials are used instead of porcelain.  Therefore its best to check with your Cosmetic Dentist that is carrying out the treatment, which product they are using before treatment.

Below is an overview of some of the products available on the market today!

Veneers different types available in the market today

The Porcelain Veneer

Porcelain veneers over the years have been the most commonly provided veneer generally in the UK.

They can be used to change the  shape, position or colour of the teeth and help reduce or close gaps between the teeth.  The traditional porcelain veneers are produced in a dental laboratory with precision models of your teeth. These are taken from impressions of your teeth, by your cosmetic dentist as part of your treatment.  Often with these type of veneers, preparation of the underlying tooth is required to help place the veneer.  Depending on the situation sometimes no preparation work is required, at Simpson and Nisbet our Cosmetic Dentists would discuss this with you after the initial assessment.

The Composite Veneer

These are created using the same materials that are used for cosmetic bonding and often white fillings.

The composite veneers are not as hard wearing in the longer term as the porcelain veneers. Therefore you can expect to have these replaced after as little as five or six years on average.

Whilst with porcelain veneers the lifespan is much longer and they tend to last around 15 years.  The composites are generally provided directly by your Cosmetic Dentist in one to two visits. Basically, the composite is applied to the tooth surface and then polished to create the veneer surface.

No Preparation Veneer

This product advances in porcelain technology.   Basically, it allows cosmetic dentists to make a thin porcelain veneer that can be bonded to the teeth without any of the tooth being removed.  This is very new on the market, therefore there is no scientific evidence to show how long these will actually last.

Other Complementary Treatments

In addition, sometimes other complementary treatments are considered in conjunction with the procedure.

For example invisible braces such as Clear Step or Invisalign to help straighten crooked teeth.  This, in turn, can also help reduce the amount of tooth preparation needed and keep the veneers thin and natural looking.

Porcelain Veneers To Make You Smile Again

Porcelain Veneers Giving You The Ultimate Smile Makeover

When looking for that ultimate smile makeover, porcelain veneers can be ideal for transforming crooked, stained or damaged teeth.

Porcelain veneers are made of a thin layer of porcelain which is created to fit over the front of the tooth.  This is similar to the way in which a false nail fits over a finger nail.  Not all veneers are porcelain, however, sometimes composite materials are used instead.

Veneers make your teeth look both natural and healthy.  They are held in place with a bond and very little preparation is required on the tooth prior to it being placed.
