Restore Your Smile With Dental Implants

Would you love to restore your smile, do you suffer from missing teeth?

If the answer is yes, we can certainly help restore your smile.  At our dental centre in Newcastle, our cosmetic dentists can replace one or multiple missing teeth.

Dental implants cannot only restore your smile, but they can also help you have full functionality of your jaw again.  We see many patients with missing teeth from Newcastle and other areas of the Northeast, some patients travelling from as far as Scotland and Cumbria for our services.

What causes missing teeth?

Missing teeth can be caused by a number of issues from gum disease to accidents and injuries.   Patients who avoid visiting the dentist regularly are neglecting their oral health and can end up losing teeth which may have been previously saved.

No matter what the reason for your lost tooth or teeth, having dental implants can be the ideal solution to a normal life again.  Dental implants can be placed either under local anaesthetic or intravenous sedation depending on the patient’s preference.  Once the area has healed generally after a few months of having the implants placed, new teeth, crowns, dentures or a bridge can be attached to the implants, giving full functionality to your jaw again and helping restore your smile.

Process for dental implants

The whole process from the initial impressions and x rays to the final placing of the new teeth, dentures, crowns or bridge tends to vary from around 3 to 6 months depending on the mouth.  A common interest many patients find with losing teeth is the jawbone starts to shrink and disappear.  Furthermore, this can sometimes result in patients having sunken lips and cheeks.  Dental implants help overcome this issue, they integrate with the jawbone keeping it both healthy and intact. In addition, they can help in the redistribution load of the surrounding teeth, in-turn helping prevent further wear and tooth loss.

Dentures can often affect peoples speech and limit the type of food they can eat, having implants can also help remove these type of issues for patients.

What does the process entail with a dental implant bridge?

Dental implant bridge how the process works

Often patients are nervous when it comes to the thought of a dental implant bridge and what the process entails.  However, this is a very safe and effective treatment.

A Dental implant bridge is very similar to a regular bridge. The difference being instead of the bridge being supported by the natural teeth, the dental implants support the bridge instead.

In some cases with patients, they do not have enough jawbone to support multiple dental implants. In this case, considering a dental implant bridge can certainly prove most beneficial to patients.  Firstly a single tooth implant is placed on either side of the missing space, on which it can then be placed.

Smoking, Drinking with Dental Implants

Smoking and drinking with dental implants

When you have dental implants placed, you will be advised to stop smoking and reduce your alcohol consumption either side of the treatment for a period of time.  This is to ensure your mouth is as healthy as possible and decrease the chances of infection.

Obviously, this is not always easy for people who smoke or drink regularly, however, if you don’t it could put your dental implant at risk.

Titanium Dental Implants

The Alternative To Dentures- Titanium Dental Implants Newcastle

Titanium dental implants can be a great alternative to dentures.

A dental implant is a simple way with a crown to replace a missing tooth, whether it is a front or back tooth.

Dental implants can help give you your confidence back and achieve a more natural looking smile. The dental implant basically acts as an anchor for the artificial tooth, it simply consists of a small titanium post which is generally placed in one or two visits.  Furthermore, these screws or posts are made of a medically pure form of titanium, after they are placed in the jaw bone and rest under it for ten weeks.  They then actually fuse to the jawbone and become bone integrated.  After the appropriate healing, these are used to replace the missing teeth, for example, fixing a crown, bridge or overdenture to it.  Titanium dental implants are used due to the fact they are compatible and can bond quite strongly to the bone tissue.

Why Choose Dental Implants

The reason many people choose dental implants is they function like a natural tooth. Whether you have a single missing tooth or multiple they can be the ideal solution. For patients who have issues with moving dentures, these can help to anchor the denture in place, offering more stability and confidence.

As we lose teeth overtime the jawbone can begin to shrink and disappear, this can result in sunken lips and cheeks.  Dental implants integrate with your jawbone, this helps to keep the bone healthy and intact. Furthermore, they can also help redistribute the load from the remaining teeth preventing wear and further loss of teeth as dental implants are functional in themselves.

When wearing dentures they can affect your speech and limit your eating, with Dental implants they not only help improve speech but also your ability to eat. In addition, they are a lot are easier to look after and keep clean compared to bridgework.

Dental Implant Surgery

Dental Implant Surgery

About dental implant surgery, why it is carried out and the benefits

Why is Dental Implant Surgery carried out?

Dental implant surgery is a procedure which replaces your tooth root with a metal, screwlike post.  An artificial tooth is then attached to this, allowing damaged or missing teeth to function very much like your natural teeth.  It also offers a welcome alternative to having dentures or bridgework carried out that does not fit well.

Dental implants questions often raised about aftercare

Dental Implants Questions – Aftercare

Dental implants questions most commonly raised are around the aftercare.  However, this is not something really to be concerned about, below are some of the most popular questions we get asked and the answers.

What happens after i have had my dental implants fitted?

After they have been fitted, the bone in your jaw will need to grow onto the implants in order to fuse them.  This can take a few months to happen, sometimes dental implants are however stable enough once fitted to have the false tooth attached sooner.  Furthermore the dentures will need to be altered to fit correctly after your surgery, with a healing cap placed onto the dental implant site to help protect it.

What happens in the event that the implant does not fuse with the bone?

This rarely happens.  If it did start to become loose during the healing process, it is easy to remove and your jaw will still heal normally. Once the jaw has healed though another dental implant can be placed.

Are they difficult to clean?

The answer is no.  However, aftercare is important to help pro-long the length of the dental implant.  We will give you advice on looking after your dental implants after the procedure.  Cleaning around the teeth which are attached to the dental implants is no different to cleaning your natural teeth. There will be areas which may be harder to reach, we will show you methods to help with this.

If I have had gum disease with my own teeth, would I get it with dental implants?

If you don’t look after your teeth, the answer is yes. You should clean your teeth regularly and have them regularly checked by your dentist.

If teeth are fixed to dental implants can i take them out?

Teeth which are attached to the implants can only be fitted and removed by a dentist.  Unless you have removable dentures attached then you would be able to remove them for cleaning.

What if I had an accident can they get damaged?

Dental implants and the teeth which they support can be damaged just like natural teeth.  If you play sports which involve contact or moving objects then it is important that you wear a mouthguard to help protect your teeth.
