New Year Resolutions For A Healthier Mouth

Everyone makes New Year’s resolutions, however many of us do not follow them through.

Making a new start can be tricky, however finding a way to stick to it is important especially when it’s involving your health. Looking after your teeth and gums is as important as other health resolutions you may make. Here are a few ideas of changes you can make in 2018, to start a healthier year for your teeth and gums.

If you haven’t seen a dentist in awhile, you will certainly not be alone.  However, booking an appointment is an important step with regards to looking after your teeth. Sensitivity, bleeding gums are all signs you need to see a dentist, remember your teeth may look and feel ok, it does not mean to say they are.

Brush twice a day

Committing to brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste is another good start if you are not doing this regularly.

Flossing

Flossing is equally important, just brushing your teeth twice a day is not enough to prevent plaque from building on your teeth. To ensure you look after your teeth and gums you need to floss too.  If you are not in the habit of doing this the new year is a great time to start.

Cutting back on sugar

Although many people may be looking at this for other health reasons, cutting back on sugar can help reduce your risk of tooth decay. Reducing the number of sugary treats you buy and fizzy drinks.

Kicking the habit

Smoking can double your risk of gum disease, according to the centres for disease control and prevention. Pick a date to give up smoking and ask your family and friends to help support you.  Find a healthy activity to engage in to try and help you kick the habit or ask your general practitioner for help.

Eat more Healthy Foods

Cutting back on sugar and adding more orally healthy foods to your diet can also help benefit your teeth. Dairy products which are higher in calcium are also good for your teeth as are foods wich call up saliva and help scrub away plaque and other food.

Start 2018 right by making your new year’s resolutions, taking them one step at a time and don’t give up.
